Blood Bank
Serving Rockland, Orange and Northern Bergen Counties

Good Samaritan Hospital operates the only hospital-based blood donor collection facility in the region. This allows Good Samaritan Hospital to meet the blood transfusion needs of our busy surgical, trauma, oncology, dialysis and medical services.

Half of all blood used in transfusions comes from donors from our community. Over 2,000 individuals donate annually at our Blood Bank. Numerous corporate and community groups participate in annual blood drives. Individuals and groups who wish to become supporters and donors can contact us at 845-368-5178. Blood donors are always needed to keep up with demand for blood. Giving blood saves lives.

The Good Samaritan Hospital Blood Bank also provides pre-surgical autologous blood services. If you are having surgery, you can, with your doctor's permission, set aside your own blood which can be reinfused during or after surgery, if needed.

FAQ’s about donating blood.

Is donating blood safe?
Donating blood is a safe process. Needles and bags used to collect blood are used only once and then discarded, making spread of infection
to the donor not possible.

Am I eligible to donate?
To donate, you must be in good general health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. If over 75 years of age, you must have
a physician's consent.

How long does it take?
The whole process takes under an hour. It starts with registration, a health history and a miniphysical. Then comes the actual donation, which usually takes less than 10-12 minutes. Afterward, you will be asked to spend a few minutes relaxing where you can have a light refreshment before returning to your normal activities.
