Cardiac Outreach
Serving Rockland, Orange and Northern Bergen Counties
The Good Samaritan Hospital Cardiac Outreach Department focuses its efforts on raising awareness and educating the public about cardiovascular disease. Through free screenings, seminars and health fairs we work to identify people who are at risk for heart disease who may be unaware of their risk. A Heart Disease Support Group meets monthly to help patients and their families learn about living with heart disease. Our aim is to increase the public's awareness and knowledge of the signs, symptoms and risk factors for heart disease and to help cardiac patients live full, healthy lives.
One of the major goals of our outreach program is to identify smokers and assist them in their efforts to quit. To that end, Good Samaritan Hospital has partnered with the Rockland County Health Department's "Put It Out Rockland" smoking cessation program that has had much success in helping smokers quit and stay tobacco free. The hospital offers free meeting space throughout the year for the program which is taught by a trained instructor.
The Cardiac Outreach Department coordinates a walking club at the Galleria Mall in Middletown, NY that offers monthly blood pressure screenings and health education. This groups promotes physical activity and fitness as tools for decreasing the risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The Mall Walkers Club is geared towards the 45+ age group and has been going strong since March 2004.
Good Samaritan Hospital partners with the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, and local health departments and community coalitions in a joint effort to fight heart disease. The hospital is an American Heart Association training site and Infant, Child and Adult CPR; Heart Saver; ACLS; and PALS courses are taught year-round by our Staff Development Department.
