  • KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

    If your blood pressure is elevated, see your doctor.  High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke.
  • KNOW YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS

    Elevated cholesterol levels increase your risk for stroke.  You can help to control your cholesterol levels by eating a healthy diet and regular exercise.
  • STOP CIGARETTE SMOKING

    Your risk of having a stroke doubles when you smoke.
  • CONTROL YOUR WEIGHT

    Obesity increases your risk of stroke.  You can control your weight by lifestyle changes, increasing your activity level and eating a healthy diet.
  • CONTROL YOUR DIABETES

    Having diabetes increases your risk of stroke.  Your doctor may recommend a nutrition program, lifestyle changes and medicine to help control your diabetes.
  • AGE

    Risk of stroke increases with age.

  • GENDER

    Stroke is more common in men than women, but more women than men die from stroke.

  • FAMILY HISTORY

    If someone in your family has had a stroke, you are at higher risk.

  • PREVIOUS STROKES OR TIA

    If you have had a previous stroke or a mini stroke (Transient Ischemic Attack) your chances of having another stroke increase by 25% - 40%.

  • ATRIAL FIBRILLATION

    If you have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation your chances for stroke increase.
