Lafayette Grille Marks Suffern Debut of “Flavors 450” Nutritional Dining Concept; Patients Can Order Off Menu for Free “Room Service”

SUFFERN, N.Y. (February 21, 2011) – Bon Secours Charity Health System’s (BSCHS) Good Samaritan Hospital is extending its highly esteemed reputation for innovation and superb patient and community care with the opening of Lafayette Grille - a new dining concept that changes the perception of hospital food.

The Lafayette Grille will serve not only as a new destination restaurant-of-choice for Suffern residents, but will cater to patients, visitors and staff at Good Samaritan.  Located inside the hospital, the Grille’s unique menu was designed by celebrity chef Cary Neff, who has appeared on Oprah, the TODAY Show and The Food Network.

The Lafayette Grille will set the standard for progressive hospital institutions by offering a very healthy, yet flavorful, menu for patients, employees, visitors and the general public. The new menu concept, dubbed “Flavors 450,” also supports a more sustainable agriculture throughout the United States due to the sizable amount of fresh produce used in each nourishing meal.
Patient “Room Service” Provided“Good Samaritan Hospital and Lafayette Grille are proud to offer an array of healthy options and services for the area, which reinforces the hospital’s dedication to supporting a healthy lifestyle for our patients, visitors and the surrounding community as a whole,” said Philip Patterson, CEO of BSCHS. “The newly-introduced high-caliber cafeteria concept even allows patients to order off of the nutrition-filled menu straight from their hospital rooms for no additional cost.  We’re essentially providing room service to our patients.”

The Flavors 450 menu concept being used at Lafayette Grille offers multiple wholesome, nutritious, and flavorful meals, with many items under a total of 450 calories. The menu contains creative health substitutions – for example, sodium is reduced or eliminated by adding herbs; soups are thickened with millet, a cereal grain, rather than cream; and ingredients are sautéed in olive oil instead of butter.  All dishes are low in fat with an emphasis on whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products and the freshest ingredients, including an extensive selection of local produce grown within 150 miles.

Chef Neff, who developed the concept and recipes for BSCHS’ food service partner Morrison Health Care Food Services, has revolutionized healthy cooking with his New York Times best-selling cookbook Conscious Cuisine, and aims to bring flavorful, healthful food to hospitals around the country. Chef Neff’s endeavor is perfectly aligned with the values of Good Samaritan Hospital, creating an ideal team to raise the bar on delicious and nutritious hospital cuisine.

“My goal is to balance meals bursting with flavor and texture with good nutrition and healing properties that can help improve your health,” explains Chef Neff.  “Dining shouldn’t be a step down when you come to a hospital – as a patient, visitor or caregiver.  If anything, it should be a step up.” |

Chef Neff hopes that by offering delicious and healthful food, people will come to expect and demand excellent food choices. “By slowing down to savor the different flavors, enjoy the aromas, notice the contrast of something chewy or crunchy, café guests can really embrace the meal.  Life just gets better because they’re living in the moment.”

Lafayette Grille also offers stations for soup, salads, pizza and pasta, sandwiches, desserts and other fare as well as special seating areas.  The Lafayette Grille is open seven days from 6:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., and patients can order breakfast, lunch and dinner from the facility.  Lafayette Grille is in the space of the former Good Samwich Café at Good Samaritan Hospital.
