Mount Alverno Assisted Living Center Senior Prom
MEDIA RELEASE / FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE: June 22, 2011
Warwick, N.Y. – It’s that time of year and dispelling many age stereotypes, Mount Alverno Center residents joined their friends, families and staff members on Tuesday, June 21 to celebrate a “Senior – Senior Prom.” The festive event was held under a huge tent on the picturesque grounds of the facility.
Mount Alverno Center Adult Home and Assisted Living Program shares the Warwick Campus of Bon Secours Charity Health System with St. Anthony Community Hospital and Schervier Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility.
“This was a great opportunity for our residents to recall and share fond memories of this traditional school days event,” said Senior Recreational Therapist Kelly Fedrizzi. “And all our staff from housekeeping to accounting to administration participated.”
The idea for a “Senior – Senior Prom” at Mount Alverno Center was born earlier this year when Fedrizzi offered to revive the same fun event that she had organized at Schervier Pavilion in 2009. Director of Recreation Kari Call liked the idea and encouraged her to put the plan into action. Fedrizzi then enlisted the help of other employees, all of whom readily volunteered, and solicited donations from local Warwick businesses.
Raffle prizes, refreshments and decorations for the event were donated by Burger King, Corwin Florist, Country Dream, El Azteca, Franico’s Pizzeria, Price Chopper, ShopRite and Yesterday’s.
On the day of the prom the staff prepared buffet tables complete with appetizers, punch and other refreshments. DJ Octavius, a popular local entertainer, was on hand to sing and play music for dancing while also clowning to the delight of his audience.
The “Senior – Senior Prom” also featured a chance for residents, family members and staff to cast their votes for prom king and queen as well as prince and princess. The winners were then presented with their sashes and crowns.
“Residents are still talking about this event and how much they enjoyed the opportunity for their families, friends and our staff to celebrate a traditional school prom,” said Recreational Director Kari Call, a certified therapy recreation specialist (CTRS). “Every day we offer interesting and entertaining things for our residents to do. Recreation is essential to the quality of life at Mount Alverno Center.”
