Rehabilitation Medicine

Rehabilitation Services

Personalized, individual care

Our therapists and assistants are highly skilled and trained in their areas of expertise. They must meet all professional and state regulations in order to remain licensed within New York State. Just as important, they are caring members of the community, and their interpersonal skills are as highly developed as their professional ones. The therapist, upon evaluation, will develop a customized treatment plan in conjunction with your physician's prescription, to address your specific problems and goals.

In our efforts to treat the whole person, we are sensitive to your emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs, along with your physical needs in overcoming the results of injury and illness. Depending upon your diagnosis and prognosis, an individualized program will be created for you. Probable length of appointment, frequency during the week and duration of care will be discussed with you along with simple but effective exercises to perform in the hospital, at home or at work that will promote healing and help you achieve the ultimate goal of a lasting recovery.

The rehab team monitors your progression carefully to make sure that you are advancing toward the established goals and remains in communication with your referring health care provider throughout your care. You may need just one type of therapy or other specialty services may be suggested to you. In all cases, the specialists are dedicated to your individual case.

Who needs rehabilitative services?

If you have had a motor vehicle or work accident, suffered a sports or spine injury, or had a stay in the hospital for an operation or an illness, you may benefit from therapy services. Also, anyone having deficits from a neurological event like a stroke, brain injury or concussion may also need our help. This could include difficulty speaking, understanding language, swallowing, sequencing/problem solving, along with muscle weakness, visual impairments, headaches and balance issues.

We also have specialized therapists at certain sites that may also assist with pediatric developmental delays and autism, post-oncological care and lymphedema, concussion, vestibular, partum/post-partum pelvic or back pain and pelvic floor rehabilitation. We can help you towards your recovery with exercise, instruction, manual techniques, modalities and the use of adaptive equipment.

How can you take advantage of our services?

You will need a prescription or referral from your doctor, dentist, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or podiatrist. However, it is always good to check with your own insurance company to be sure they cover the services requested. Once you know you would like to pursue rehabilitative care, please call the Coordination of Care Department at 1-855-346-2090 (prompts 6 then 3 then 1) to set up an initial evaluation at any of our three sites.

Health Matters

Listen to WTBQ Radio’s “Health Matters” with Steve Albanese of Access PT and Howard Wilen and Hillary Bastone, Rehabilitation Services for St. Anthony Community Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). They discuss why exercise and physical therapy are important in the healing process after surgery or after an injury.

The goal of our rehabilitation department is to work in conjunction with your physicians and alongside the nurses and case managers, to get you home safely as soon as possible following an accident, injury, illness or surgery. This may be achieved by attending physical therapy which will help you regain your mobility by range of motion and strengthening exercises, along with transfer, ambulation and stairs training.

Occupational therapy will also aid in mobility training and assess your ability to perform activities of daily living like dressing, bathing, and grooming. Speech therapy may need to evaluate your swallowing ability for eating and drinking, along with speaking and cognitive ability. During your hospital stay, all specialties will help determine, along with yourself and your family, if any further outpatient or home services or a possible rehabilitative stay at a facility, may benefit you.

These recommendations, along with required equipment for a safe discharge, will be evaluated by the therapists and will be communicated to case management. Case management will discuss with you how to best acquire the suggested equipment and services per your insurance coverage or financial situation.

Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language pathology, may be three distinct parts of the rehabilitative services at St. Anthony, Good Samaritan, or Bon Secours Community Hospital, but they are all conducted in one place, which is good news for you. If you require more than one type of therapy, you won’t have to travel to different locations. What’s more, having our skilled professionals housed in one place enables frequent communication between them, which benefits your recovery.

Physical Therapy

When health problems arise due to an injury or disease, our physical therapy department works to help regain strength and relearn the activities needed to return to daily life. This may include learning to walk, to control balance, or regain motion of an arm or leg. The program begins with an evaluation which is developed into a plan of care. In addition to education; exercise, hands-on treatment and modalities like moist heat and electrical stimulation may be used to achieve your goals. Our strength is our ability to create a combination of services that address your unique requirements and help prevent a re-occurrence.

Occupational Therapy

Contrary to common belief, occupational therapists don’t just help you get back to your career. To us, the term “occupation” simply means whatever it is that you do or “your activities of daily living”. You may have challenges due to a stroke or head injury, a job-related injury or an age-related disorder. Or perhaps you underwent an elbow, wrist or hand surgery for a fracture or a tendon repair. Occupational therapy may help you regain the strength and fine motor skills of your arm and hand, relieve physical discomfort, or teach you to feed and dress yourself again. Occupational therapists can also assist in vision therapy and preliminary driving screening following neurological events.

Speech/Language Pathology

When your ability to speak or to understand others is affected, or if you have trouble swallowing, this department can help. Our speech/language pathologists evaluate and treat disorders which may have resulted from surgery, facial injury, stroke, head injury or a developmental disability, just to name a few. Such problems can affect people from infancy to the elderly. After a thorough evaluation, sessions are designed to improve the targeted areas and promote more effective communication, where comprehension skills are as important to expression. If necessary, speech language pathologists and radiologists will work together to perform special swallowing studies to aid in further evaluation of your deficits.
