Speech and Swallowing Therapy

Good Samaritan Hospital speech/language pathologists offer patients evaluation and treatment of speech and swallowing disorders. Services are offered for children over the age of three, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Speech services available for the younger population focus on articulation disorders, language disorders, voice and fluency disorders, developmental apraxia, and oral motor disorders, including tongue thrust. Services for older patients focus on aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, voice and fluency disorders, cognitive disorders, and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). Particular expertise is offered for professional public speakers and singers. Good Samaritan has one of the few speech therapy programs for professional speakers offered in the tri-state area.

Good Samaritan Hospital also offers video-fluoroscopic swallow studies for both inpatients and outpatients. This procedure assesses the anatomy and physiology of the oral and pharyngeal stages of the patients swallow. Videoflouroscopic studies help therapists develop safe diets and effective feeding strategies for patients with dysphagia.
