Same Day Joint Replacement

At Good Samaritan Hospital, qualified patients may be deemed suitable to participate in our Same-Day Joint Replacement program for hips, knees and shoulders. Our expert surgeons utilize newly advanced joint replacement surgical techniques and anesthesia to ensure a smooth and efficient procedure, minimizing recovery times and maximizing outcomes.

Key components in same-day surgery include coordinated care, pre-operative preparation, personalized pain control and accelerated therapy treatments.

Benefits of same-day joint replacement surgery include:

  • No overnight hospital stays which lowers the risk of hospital-acquired infections and complications
  • Quicker recovery period
  • Advanced pain management techniques
  • Fast-tracked transition to physical therapy and early mobility

Not all patients may be candidates for same-day joint replacement surgery. Patients must consult with their surgeon to determine if they meet strict criteria to participate.

Your Stay

Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), has completed a comprehensive upgrade to its Orthopedic Surgery Center.  The unit offers a new level of patient experience to the region and fosters a specialized, patient-first approach to orthopedic care.

The 10,000-square-foot unit offers 14 private en suite patient recovery rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art digital monitoring consoles that nurses can use to input all patient documentation. The modern space also includes a multi-purpose room used for patient education, mindfulness exercises and community dining; a PT/OT gym complete with large scale simulations/props to help patients practice navigating activities of daily living; a walking track and a family waiting area with a coffee bar.

The unit also has centralized meeting spaces for multidisciplinary collaboration. The project created a separate, private entrance to the Orthopedic Surgery Center. Patients are greeted at a separate, private reception area, delivering a premium patient experience.

Success Stories

Louis May, MD

Louis May, MD is back on the ski slopes

Knee Replacement Helps This Athlete Get Back on the Slopes!
Thanks to Good Samaritan Hospital, this Rockland resident can enjoy the sport he loves!

Louis May, MD, is an avid skier, and at work, as a gastroenterologist, he’s on his feet all day performing colonoscopies, endoscopies and other GI procedures. He had been having pain, swelling and stiffness of the knee for many years, and he underwent multiple cortisone and gel injections in the past. When he started having trouble walking and couldn’t even ski up to his standards, he knew it was time for knee replacement surgery.

“Over the last six months, the pain in my knees was getting worse and I was even having trouble walking down the stairs,” said the 72-year-old Tuxedo resident.

Many of his friends suggested he have his surgery in the city, but instead, he decided to have surgery performed by Arup Bhadra, MD, Director of Joint Replacement Program at Good Samaritan Hospital. Having reviewed his x-rays and CT scan of the knee, Dr Bhadra explained about robotic assisted knee replacement in detail. A team comprised of his surgeon, anesthesia and physical therapist saw him preoperatively. His knee replacement was performed with robotic assistance under regional anesthesia (nerve block). Two hours after his surgery, he began physical therapy and he recovered in the hospital’s newly renovated Orthopedic unit with all private rooms and ensuite bathrooms. “I even had a room with a view of the Ramapo Mountains,” he added.

Dr. May went back to work three weeks after his surgery in September. He said that his friends and family were worried that he wouldn’t be able to go skiing this winter, but he already hit the slopes in his beloved Killington, VT just 47 days after his surgery. And if that wasn’t enough, he proudly boasts that he went on a 15-mile bike ride 33 days after surgery!

An accomplished athlete, Dr. May said he has been playing sports as long as he can remember. “I grew up in Queens and played stick ball, football, baseball and hockey but it was always on cement, so that took its toll on my knees,” he recalled. As he got older, besides skiing, he added tennis and bike riding to the list of sports that he loves. And he’s looking forward to getting back on the slopes as often as possible this winter!
